State to open COVID-19 recovery facility at Greentree Manor

Waterford — The state Department of Public Health announced Friday it will open a 30-bed COVID-19 recovery facility here at Greentree Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

The facility will serve southeastern Connecticut, admitting individuals from hospitals and other congregate settings who have tested positive for COVID-19 and need nursing level convalescent care. Ryders Management, which operates Greentree Manor, will operate the new facility, which is expected to begin admitting its first patients next week, according to the department.

State officials introduced such recovery facilities in the spring, during the first wave of the pandemic, intending to free up hospital beds by enabling hospitals to discharge patients who are still positive for the disease but do not need hospital-level care. The approach was later expanded to include COVID-19-positive nursing home residents, helping skilled nursing facilities support infection control practices by cohorting residents appropriately during outbreaks.

Greentree Manor is the fifth COVID-19 recovery facility in the state, bringing total capacity to 337 beds. The other facilities are in East Hartford, Meriden, Wallingford and Torrington.
