Waterford — People for centuries have been seeking solace by the seaside.

On Saturday, Kelly King and her daughter, Emily, of Brooklyn were watching the waves break along the beach at Harkness Memorial State Park. The Kings came to the park so Emily could see the water before returning to the mountains of New Hampshire, where she attends college. Kelly said it's impossible to be tense while standing there looking at the scene.

The peace on the shore was interrupted only briefly when a child walked toward a flock, or gaggle, of Brant geese, which took off.
