New London's Higher Edge to start search for new director

New London — New London-based nonprofit Higher Edge Inc. announced this week that Theresa M. Armendarez plans to resign as executive director, effective June 25.

Armendarez, who has served as executive director since 2018, said in a statement that she is relocating out of state where her husband has accepted a new position.

Higher Edge, founded by former New London State Representative Chris Soto, guides low-income and first-generation students through enrollment, retention and graduation from college by providing the support and resources needed for success. With locations in New London and Willimantic, the nonprofit serves up to 70 high school seniors and over 150 college students annually.

Armendarez is credited with helping to strengthen the nonprofit's financial position, improving and stabilizing operations and organizational processes, and building new important strategic partnerships, among other accomplishments.

To ensure a successful transition for students, partners and supporters, she will step down once her successor has been named. The board of directors will begin its search in February.

“It has been an honor to lead such a wonderful organization,” Armendarez said. “Working with an outstanding board of directors, an amazing and expert staff, and the vibrant community of partners has been a real pleasure. I am thankful to the board of directors for the opportunity and look forward to watching Higher Edge’s continued success.”

Higher Edge’s board president, Kristi D. Kelly, said, “Theresa leaves Higher Edge in a strong position for continued growth, and we sincerely thank her for her contribution and leadership in her time here. The board wishes her the best of luck and opportunities in her future endeavors.”
