Stonington High basketball team in COVID quarantine

Stonington -- Members of the Stonington High School boys basketball team are in quarantine after possibly being exposed to a teammate who has displayed symptoms of COVID-19.

In an email to families, high school principal Mark Friese wrote that a player had multiple family members who were positive and the player exhibited symptoms consistent with the virus.

He said the Ledge Light Health District has directed the school to treat the player as a "presumed positive" because of the symptoms and the fact that there are things such as false-negative tests and the incubation period of the virus.

He said the school has contact traced and quarantined all direct contacts.

"So it is possible that even if the player's test comes back negative we may be required to maintain this quarantine. That is Ledge Light's and our district's way of ensuring the safety of all of our students, families, and community.  We are continuing to share with Ledge Light all data regarding this situation as it is provided to us. If there is a change, we will be the first to let you know," Friese wrote.

"Since the beginning of the school year, we have stated it is our intention and desire to provide our students every opportunity of normalcy that we can as we navigate through this pandemic, provided it is safe and follows the guidance that we are required to follow. So I will update you on Monday if there is a change, not before," he wrote.

The team first game was slated for to be played at home against Waterford on Feb. 12 but that has been postponed, according to the CIAC.
