In the Times: Poole named new assistant Times editor

I’m happy to announce that the Times has a new assistant editor: Owen Poole, a former sportswriter and most recently copy editor for The Day.

Owen brings us strong organizational, writing and layout skills, which we will need as we move toward a new era of weekly newspapers.

Owen grew up in Waterford but attended St. Joseph School in New London as a youth. He then attended Waterford schools through his junior high and senior high years.

“I had a Day paper route back then,” he said.

He has been a sportswriter for The Westerly Sun and The Bulletin in Norwich and a copy editor for The Manchester Journal-Inquirer before settling back at The Day in 2017.

He has written about high school sports, UConn football, the Connecticut Sun WNBA team, the former Defenders baseball team in Norwich and the Waterford Speedbowl.

Owen currently lives in Uncasville with his wife and three daughters.

“I do sometimes miss writing regularly, and I hope to be able to do that at least a little” at the Times, he said.

Owen will be in charge of getting briefs, honor rolls, dean’s lists and other essential items into the paper and helping shepherd calendar items that are now being processed by Lori Barstow, the newsroom secretary.

You can send brief items to times@theday.com. Calendar items go to neighbors@theday.com. To congratulate Owen on his new position, email o.poole@theday.com.

Meanwhile, stay tuned as we prepare to roll out some exciting new ways to connect to the Times in the months ahead!

Lee Howard is the Times community editor. He can be reached at l.howard@theday.com.
