S.T.E.P.S. gets $150,000 grant for summer program

The Connecticut State Department of Education has awarded S.T.E.P.S., a Groton-based nonprofit focused on empowering girls, a $150,000 innovation grant as part of the department's summer grant programs.

The organization, which stands for Striving Toward Empowered Personal Success, is using the grant for its Summer Leadership College/Career Enrichment Program, scheduled for July 12 to Aug. 6.

S.T.E.P.S. said in a news release the grant will allow it to offer the program at no cost, including transportation and meals, to 150 young women ages 16 to 19 in southeastern Connecticut.

The program will be held at local colleges and other venues, and will include STEM projects as well as college tours, field trips, mindfulness activities and information on personal finances.

S.T.E.P.S. is partnering with the New London County Section of the National Council of Negro Women and Soroptimist International Connecticut Shoreline.

For more information on the program, contact S.T.E.P.S. founder and president Beatrice Jennette at (860) 961-2247 or beatricej.steps@gmail.com.

According to the Department of Education, other innovation grants in southeastern Connecticut included $229,731 for the Sea Research Foundation in Mystic and $67,000 for Writer's Block Ink in New London.
