    Ledge Light launches mosquito-control program

Ledge Light Health District is offering mosquito-control products and consultation services to residents in East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, Lyme, Old Lyme, New London, North Stonington, Stonington and Waterford.

Free of charge, the district will provide residents and homeowner associations with site visits to assess standing water issues and make recommendations for eliminating mosquito breeding conditions. The district also will provide free supplies of larvicidal mosquito “dunks,” which, when dropped into pools of standing water, eliminate mosquitoes before they become adults, lessening the potential for such mosquito-borne ailments as West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis and Zika virus.

Homeowners can apply the dunks in water bodies of less than 400 square feet. Dunks are safe for use around the home because they utilize a naturally occurring biological ingredient.

The district advises residents to eliminate standing water in wetlands areas, depressions, clogged gutters, garden containers, used tire piles, pool covers and tree holes.

For more information, visit Ledge Light's website, www.llhd.org, or residents who are east of the Thames River can call Kara Hovland at (860) 448‐4882, ext. 1308, or, if west of the river, call Patti Myers at (860) 434‐1605, ext. 214.
