Wildflower lore and legends explored at Waterford Library
Wildflowers will be front and center at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 17, when the Waterford Public Library hosts Ken Elkins of Bent of the River Audubon Center.
Wildflower folklore, including strange and often dangerous herbal “cures” and black magicas well as legends of love, will be up for discussion.
The real medicinal and poisonous properties of wildflowers will meet the romantic legends, histories and wild superstitions that surround many favorites.
One romantic legend is the naming of the Forget Me Not. The story goes that while being swept away by a flash flood, a man tossed the bouquet of these lovely blue flowers to his lady friend on the bank with the three now-famous words: “Forget me not!”
The Zoom event is free and open to the public. To register, go to the library’s Calendar of Events section on its website or look for the library Facebook page. For more information, contact Ken Elkins at kenneth.elkins@audobon.org or www.bentoftheriver.audubon.org.
