Elsa storm remnants expected to hit southeastern Connecticut on Friday

The remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa are expected to head into New England on Friday.

The effects of the system will start in southeastern Connecticut in the early morning hours of Friday, said Gary Lessor of the Meteorological Studies and Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University. Depending on what track it takes, it could reach as far north as parts of Norwich.

After making landfall along Florida's northern Gulf Coast, the weakening storm killed at least one person in Florida on Wednesday and injured several others when a possible tornado struck a campground at a Navy base in southeast Georgia, the Associated Press reported.

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for New England waters, noting the potential for high winds and waves. “Mariners should monitor the latest forecasts for Elsa from the National Hurricane Center,” it said.

There is “definitely a lot of potential for wind and rain,” Lessor said — southeastern Connecticut could see ¾ of an inch to 1½ inches of rain, and wind gusts could peak at over 50 mph.

“People should be prepared for extended power outages that could last a couple days,” he said.

The rain and winds should taper off into Friday afternoon, Lessor said, though the evening could see showers.

After that, mixed sun and clouds are forecast for this weekend, with maybe a shower, he said.
