New London — How should the city spend the more than $26 million in American Rescue Plan funds it expects to receive this year and next? 

The city is urging residents and businesses to share their ideas by completing an online survey at bit.ly/narpsurvey. English and Spanish versions are available. The deadline to complete the survey is Aug. 15.

The federal money is intended to aid the city in a variety of ways, including assisting households, small businesses and nonprofits as well as industry sectors, including tourism and retail. Based on the survey results, city officials will organize ideas and, when necessary, request more information from federal agencies.

“We encourage residents and business owners to complete the survey so we know where their pain points are,” Mayor Michael Passero said. “Once we know this, we will be able to utilize the funds as effectively as possible.”

The survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete, asks how COVID-19 has affected residents the most and what unmet needs it has created. The survey also asks whether city officials should pursue programs and initiatives that benefit residents in the long term or whether they should focus on current needs.

In addition to multiple-choice questions, the survey also allows respondents to describe in their own words their ideas for using the ARP funds.

“I urge our neighbors to fill out the survey," said Jeanne Milstein, city director of human services. “The pandemic created significant hardships for so many in our community. Please let us know what you need to restore health, safety and well-being.”
