Miss America Organization seeking convertibles, drivers for Mystic parade

    Mystic — Wanted: Ragtops.

The Miss America Organization is looking for convertibles and drivers to transport Miss America competitors and former Miss Americas through downtown Mystic next month in a Labor Day celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Miss America competition.

The next Miss America will be chosen in December at Mohegan Sun.

Next month’s traditional “Show Us Your Shoes” parade, so named because that’s what parade-goers called out to Miss America candidates as they motored past on the Atlantic City boardwalk in years past, is set to begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 6, at Mystic Aquarium and wind its way through downtown Mystic.

“We need convertibles. We have quite a few lined up already but we’re still looking for more,” Shantel Krebs, chairwoman of the Miss America Organization’s board, said Friday.

Interested drivers must have a convertible, a valid driver’s license and insurance, Krebs said, and must be prepared to chauffeur one of the 51 state (and Washington, D.C.) officeholders in this year’s competition. Interested drivers should email the organization at info@missamerica.org.

Following the parade, Miss America competitors will visit Ocean Beach Park in New London, the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Buttonwood Farm in Griswold and the Slater Museum at Norwich Free Academy. A formal gala is planned at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Mohegan Sun.

Sponsors of the parade include ThinkMystic.com, Olde Mistick Village and the Eastern Regional Tourism District. For information about sponsorships, email brent.adams@missamerica.org.
