New London police to receive federal funds for de-escalation training

New London — The City of New London will receive a $70,402 federal grant to support de-escalation training and other community policing practices at the New London Police Department.

The grant award was announced Thursday by U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District.

New London Mayor Michael Passero said first responders routinely are called to emergencies involving people in emotional distress that could easily escalate into dangerous situations for the victim and the first responders.

“De-escalation training is crucial to prepare our police officers to better deal with these situations, creating a safer situation for all involved,” he said.

The funding comes through the Community Policing Development program, operated by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS.
