Backus receives top grade for safety from watchdog group

Norwich — Backus Hospital is one of four Hartford HealthCare hospitals to receive an “A” grade for safety from the The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit, independent national watchdog organization.

Backus, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Hartford Hospital and the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain are among eight hospitals in the state to receive the “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2021.

The organization recognizes each hospital’s’ achievements in protecting patients from harm and errors. The Leapfrog Group assigns grades to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

Hartford Hospital’s inclusion on the A list is especially significant because of its status as a large tertiary care hospital that treats a high number of complex cases, according to Hartford HealthCare.
