Connecticut to continue requiring athletes to wear masks

With COVID-19 cases surging amid the emergence of the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus, the state is requiring all participants to wear masks at sports events regardless of vaccination status.

The move halts planned new guidance that was expected to go into effect Thursday and would have allowed fully vaccinated athletes, coaches and other officials to go without masks at athletic competitions. Instead, the guidance that has been in place for winter sports throughout this season will stay in place, according to a news release Wednesday night from state Public Health Commissioner Manisha Juthani.

The shift is in line with policies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the release said.
