New London to explain new lead water line replacement program

New London — The city is holding a Lead Free New London virtual open house from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday to introduce the public to an initiative to identify and replace lead service lines.

Water provided by the City of New London is lead-free when it leaves the treatment plant but its quality may change as the water flows through the water service lines and in-home plumbing and fixtures that may contain lead.

“The City of New London takes the issue of lead in drinking water very seriously and to guarantee continued protection of our community, the City is proactively advancing a program for lead service line education, inventory, and replacement with the use of state funding to lower the burden of costs on private property owners,” the city said in the announcement.

The city has created an initial inventory of lead service pipes and the Lead Service Line Replacement Program is being implemented to improve the inventory and eliminate all lead service lines over a 5-year period.
