New London to open warming shelters as severe cold weather descends on the region

New London — With bitter cold temperatures expected Friday night and continuing through the weekend, the city is partnering with local agencies to offer warming centers.

The city and the Public Library of New London will be opening a warming center from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

After business hours, people experiencing homelessness will be directed to the Homeless Hospitality Center, 325 Huntington St.

Gov. Ned Lamont is activating the state's Severe Cold Weather protocol beginning Friday night. Anyone in need of shelter can call 211 to find a list of the closest locations.

Should anyone require additional assistance during this intense cold-weather period, they are encouraged to call 911 in an emergency or (860) 447-5269 for routine requests for assistance. The city police and fire departments also will be actively looking for people at risk and will assist those in need of shelters.
