Groton — Workers were putting up scaffolding around the Historic Ship Nautilus on Friday at the Naval Submarine Base.

The Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, is undergoing an estimated $36 million preservation project.

The sub made its maiden voyage in 1955, was decommissioned in 1980 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. It is expected to return to its home at the Submarine Force Library and Museum this summer.
