February is Black History Month, and the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Mystic & Noank Library to celebrate with a look into Black literature. The chamber and library are inviting notable speakers, local residents, and students from Stonington and Groton to read inspiring excerpts from Black authors. This celebration will be held outdoors at Mystic River Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.

In honor of Black History Month, the library will create a display featuring books related to Black History, at all reading levels, for students and community members to read. Christine Bradley, director of the Mystic & Noank Library, said, “There is so much wonderful fiction and non-fiction published by Black authors. I am delighted to be a part of this event and to celebrate that.”

Bruce Flax, Mystic Chamber president said, “Christine came by the Chamber to talk about a follow-up community event to the Mystic & Noank Library’s June Reading on Tap event. Through talking the idea out, it became the perfect opportunity for the communities to invite the next generation to express themselves, with Black History Month as the backdrop.”

In case of inclement weather, Mystic’s Celebration of Black Literature will be held on Feb. 26 at Mystic River Park instead. Sign up to read on the Mystic Chamber of Commerce website.
