Susan Perry Luxton of Waterford will be exhibiting her acrylic and watercolor landscapes and portraits at the Waterford Public Library throughout the month of April.

Perry discovered decades ago that creating art brought her joy. Being an avid reader, she found the endpapers of old books fascinating and began to experiment with paper marbling, floating and manipulating paints on thickened water. She was captivated by the color and design and fell in love with the process. She later created mosaics using shards of ceramics and pieces of sea glass, and now creates with acrylics and watercolors. Her library exhibit will feature her landscapes and portraits.

‘Colonial Goodwife’ starts series on women’s history

Binge-watch “Vikings,” “Turn,” or “Frontier,” and you’ll see people being disemboweled, tortured and decapitated – but you won’t see anything about menstruation, chamber pots, birth control, breastfeeding or poopy babies. These “unsanitary” subjects still make people uncomfortable and are omitted from history.

And that’s the subject of Waterford Public Library’s Zoom program, “The Not-So-Good-Life of the Colonial Goodwife,” scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 18.

The subject not only makes audiences laugh and grimace, it also honors our foremothers. It’s not about quilting bees and spinning wheels – it’s a virtual presentation about the little-known issues faced by New England’s colonial women.

Presented by Velya and Ehris Urban, mother and daughter, founders of the Grounded Goodwife, this event is the first of a three-part series conducted on the third Wednesday of April, May and June. Future events include “The Gilded Age Wife” (May 16) and “Suffragettes in Corselettes” (June 20).

Update on Brexit from an Irish point of view

Paul Nugent, executive director of the Southeast Connecticut World Affairs Council (SECWAC), will provide an update on Brexit in the context of Irish-British-EU (and US) relations, and the ongoing Centenary Commemorations of Irish independence at the Waterford Public Library from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, April 21.

Participants may attend in person or via Zoom.

Rescheduled from Feb. 26, the program is part of the library’s Great Decisions: Global Topics for Local Discussion Series supported by the Connecticut Humanities.

Nugent grew up in Ireland, attending college and graduate school at University College Dublin, before emigrating to the U.S. in 1989. He is currently director of medical writing at Pfizer.
