    Carving out a new landmark

Somer Waters carves the likeness of two owls into the trunk of an elm tree in the yard of his aunt Jane Price, on Pequot Avenue in New London on Saturday, April 16, 2022. Waters, who lives in Pasadena, Calif., is visiting family in New London and was asked by his aunt to carve something out of the trunk. Waters' daughter Elya, 10, sketched three owls onto a photo of the trunk from which her father went to work. Carving started Saturday morning and had to be complete by Monday afternoon when Somer and Elya fly home. Price explained the tree, which had rotted from the inside, was finally taken down this winter when she was able to reach an agreement with the neighbors who's property the tree straddles as well.
