Matthew Liles of Glastonbury led from start to finish to win the Odetah Mini Golf Tournament Championship in Bozrah on Sunday, June 5.

Professonal and amateur putters from as far as Minnesota and Florida converged on Bozrah to compete in the 2022 event with total cash and prizes valued at $2,500.

Played on the Knolls & Holes course at Odetah Camping Resort, each player played four rounds of stroke play plus a bonus “Aces Only” round over 5 hours on a course that was re-carpeted to increase its difficulty a bit from years past.

Answering the challenge was the 38-year-old Liles, who has played in approximately 20 tournaments over the past 20 years, but has found his best success in just the past year.

Matthew placed third in the 2021 Matterhorn Pro-Am in Canton, and second in the Taber’s Open (Auburn, Maine) last fall, before following up with his first championship run to win the $1,000 first-place prize.

Liles shot 159 over the 4 stroke play rounds, averaging 39/75 on the par 43 course.

Finishing in second with a 163 was 2009 champion Steve Barrett of Norwich. Justin Seymour of Manchester, who has four pro tournament wins in the past year alone, was third with a 164, while Bill Mezier of Staten Island, New York shot the lowest round of the tournament with a 37 to help capture fourth place with a 167.

In the Amateur Division, Robin Schwartzman of Minneapolis shot a 178 to take the top prize of a $100 gift card and a Putt18 Putting Mat. Robin edged out the Wife/Husband duo of Sheri-Anne and Charles Day of Danielson, who shot 178 and 180, respectively, with Zachary Lenkiewic of Baltimore taking fourth with a 183.

An “Aces Only” consolation round was also played with four players sharing the bonus $100 prize: John Holland (Hamburgh, N.J.), Steven Miller (Baltic), Ronel Quealy (Lebanon) and Tom Loftus (Minneapolis).

In all, 39 players were registered (17 pro, 22 amateur) for this event, which has been held annually in the fall since 2002, but since the pandemic seems to have found a new home as an annual spring event.
