Senior health fair returns to New London next week

New London ― The city’s Senior Affairs Commission will hold its second annual Health Fair from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the New London Senior Center, 120 Broad St.

The fair, part of the commission’s Life Enrichment Program, aims to inform the public on health issues important to seniors and the services available to them.

Karen Paul, chairperson of the commission, said the commission has enlisted about 25 vendors so far that include Nutmeg Pharmacy, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and a representative from the state’s Elder Justice Hotline at (860) 808-5555.

She added she hopes to have representatives from different apartments that house older or disabled adults at this year’s fair, seeing housing has become a big issue. She also hopes the event will bring seniors out into the community.

“A lot of seniors were isolated with the COVID-19 pandemic and many are still afraid,” Paul said. “This event hopefully will help them socialize. Socialization is an important part of seniors’ activity.”

Paul said there will be vaccination shots available for pneumonia, the flu and COVID-19.

The event is open to the public.
