Grasso substitute teacher permanently ‘removed’ after shoving incident

The Connecticut Technical Education and Career System on Nov. 7 notified the Ella T. Grasso Technical High School substitute teacher recorded shoving and swearing at a student that she was permanently removed from the CTECS substitute teacher list.

The letter, which The Day acquired on Monday through a Freedom of Information Act request filed last week, did not reference the incident three days prior involving substitute teacher Sandra Ebdon.

Labor relations specialist Ellen L. Morris wrote to Ebdon, “Please note that you have been removed from the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) Substitute Teacher list permanently, effective November 7, 2022. You are no longer authorized to Substitute Teaching in the Connecticut Technical Education and Career Systems (CTECS) School District.”

A Nov. 4 video taken by a Grasso Tech student showed Ebdon grabbing and shoving a student, and then saying “I’m so sick of you nosy-ass little (expletives) not doing what you’re supposed to be doing” and “You guys act like such asses.”

Principal Patricia Feeney said Tuesday the investigation into the incident has been completed but didn’t elaborate further. She declined to say whether Ebdon called or emailed with any questions about the Nov. 7 letter.

Ebdon couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday.

The Day had also requested complaints lodged against Ebdon during her tenure at Grasso Tech, and CTECS provided messages ― via email and the messaging app ParentSquare ― from three people. The names of all senders are redacted.

One person emailed Assistant Principal Sheila Vlaun the video at 3:33 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 and wrote, “She has issues and should not be working with children this is totally unacceptable. I’m in shock with how she put her Hands on a student and the language she used. She needs to be fired ASAP!!!!”

A person who sent the video expressed to Principal Patricia Feeney the feeling that incidents at the school aren’t taken seriously enough, to which Feeney replied, “I am truly grateful that you sent this to us. We are taking this situation very seriously and are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again.”

Feeney replied to another person that she couldn’t discuss the matter due to confidentiality reasons. The person replied, “Ugh the confidentiality garbage…this teacher assaulted a student!!!” and added that everyone wants answers, and that multiple parents are voicing prior issues with staff.

Not everyone shares the view of the complainants: Others expressed in internet comments that they want to know the other side of the story and said kids can be disrespectful.

In a letter to the editor that ran in Monday’s paper, former Grasso Tech substitute teacher Charlie Miller said he found Ebdon “caring, competent, and great with the kids,” and that she took extra compassion to get to know kids personally.

“Substitute teaching is not easy and until you gain the respect of the staff and students you may experience tough situations,” he wrote. “The kids seem to think sometimes that they can get away with anything. I am not saying that what Sandra did was right, but I am saying that sometimes subs are pushed to the brink.”
