On Feb. 19, a new street sign was unveiled on Fowler Avenue in Norwich, recognizing it as John R. Fells Way. Roberta J. Vincent and John’s children were instrumental in purchasing the sign which was designed by City Engineer Brian R. Long,.

The image of John’s trumpet on the sign signifies the veterans he has honored by playing “Taps” at their funerals, commemorating the memory of members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and the Coast Guard.

Adam Richardson, administrative aide to the Secretary of the State, read the certificate as John stared in wonderment of being honored and the number of people in attendance. Family members included: his wife Marianna, children Anthony, Maria and Cadie; sons-in-law, six grandchildren; Colchester Honor Guard Tom O’Meara, John Mainella and David Johnson; John Waggoner Norwich Area Veterans Council; neighbors and friends.

The Honorable Stephanie Thomas presented this certificate to John Richard Fells:

For your service to your country and unwavering commitment to your Community. For your love of family, devotion to your faith, and the respect and pride you have displayed during your lifetime. In honor of a life lived to its fullest that has touched so many, from this day on, Fowler Avenue will hereby be recognized as “John R. Fells Way.”

John and his family have lived on Fowler Avenue for over 50 years. Everyone was invited back to their home for hot coffee, doughnuts, fruit, vegetables and specially made cookies which read: John R. Fells Way. Father Bob Washabaugh, priest from St. Mary Church, stopped by to congratulate John. Mayor Peter Nystrom also has been a big supporter of this endeavor.
