New London ― Mitchell College announced Monday that Connecticut Attorney General William Tong will be the speaker for the college’s 79th commencement, to be held Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m. on the Mitchell College Green.

Tong, who previously spent 12 years as a state representative, has served as attorney general since 2019 and is now in his second term. He was the first Asian American elected to statewide office in Connecticut and the first Chinese American elected attorney general in the country.

“As a public servant he has addressed issues that touch the lives of Connecticut residents, including many of our students and their families,” Mitchell College President Tracy Y. Espy said in a news release. “His lived experiences are sure to inspire our graduates, and we look forward to welcoming him.”

A Connecticut native, Tong attended schools in West Hartford before graduating from Phillips Academy Andover, Brown University, and the University of Chicago Law School. He lives in Stamford with his wife and their three children.
