Local nonprofits to implement energy-efficient upgrades

Groton ― Local non-profit organizations have received grants from Groton Utilities and Bozrah Light and Power through the State of Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act Tax Credit Program, according to Groton Utilities.

Bill Memorial Library in the City of Groton received a $150,000 grant in December for an upcoming project to install energy-efficient windows.

“There are 22 windows in the library that are original to its construction in 1890 or to the 1907 addition. These windows will be restored, reusing the original, historic glass if possible,” according to library director Wendy Connal. “All non-historic glass will be replaced with restoration glass, imitating the original. The window sashes and frames are included in the restoration, and weatherstripping will be installed to add energy efficiency.”

“Thirty-three windows that have already supplanted the original windows will be replaced by windows manufactured to look period-appropriate with restoration glass,” Connal added. “The newly manufactured windows will be made of insulated glass for energy efficiency.”

The Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SCADD) received $123,230 to buy 5 commercial-grade, energy-efficient washers and 5 commercial-grade, energy-efficient dryers for its Lebanon Pines facility.

According to Stacey Lawton, CEO of SCADD, the current equipment constantly needs repair. The new equipment will be located in its own building, while the current equipment is in the basement of a residence hall.

SCADD will be doing the upgrades in conjunction with a project to replace wastewater infrastructure that received federal funding with the help of U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District.
