Norwich man charged with threatening to shoot Walmart management, customer

Norwich ― A local man was arrested on Thursday after police said he threatened to shoot corporate management and a customer.

Derek A. Carignan, 62, of 5 Evans St., was charged Thursday with breach of peace for his remarks while working his job at the Norwich Walmart, police said.

“All corporate management needs to be shot, just like the Republicans!” Carignan said. “If the customer comes back, you’ll have to carry him out. I don’t say it unless I mean it.”

The comments on Monday, April 17 came after Carignan got into two verbal altercations, one with a contractor working on the property and one with a customer, police said.

Detective Peter Karasuk spoke Tuesday with the store manager, who told Karasuk that Carignan swore at the contractor, who told him not to drive through wet cement. Carignan later gestured the middle finger at a customer who asked about the store’s hours of operation.

Carignan left the store and later returned to apologize and said he spoke out of anger and did not mean it.

Corporate management requested increased police presence following the incident.

Karasuk later met with Carignan at his home, where Carignan said he had been suspended from his job with pay. He told Karasuk that he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and takes medications. Carignan, a registered firearm owner, voluntarily turned over his firearms to Norwich police. He said he was afraid someone might hurt him, but would never shoot anyone or himself.
