Potential rate increase and a new festival at Ocean Beach Park

New London ― Visitors to Ocean Beach Park could see an increase in parking rates this summer, and the park will host a new festival among other fun-filled events.

Last year, the City Council approved a $5 increase to daily parking rates to compensate for losses from the COVID-19 pandemic and rainy weather. The park could see another $5 increase this year.

David Sugrue, the park’s manager, said he will be proposing to increase the daily rates to $30 weekdays and $35 weekends at the City Council’s May 1 regular meeting. While the park is owned by the city, it is managed by the company Centerplate, formerly Boston Concessions Group Inc.

Residential season passes would have a slight increase from $42.54 to $43, and visitor season passes would go from $140 to $160. Sugrue reserved comments about the increase until discussing it with the council.

Despite the potential increase, the park has a lineup of new events.

One of those is the Boriken Festival, an all-day event to celebrate Puerto Rican culture, on June 10 at noon. The event was first held by Global City in Norwich last year but will make the move to Ocean Beach this year. It’s organized by a group called Boriken United of Southeastern Connecticut.

Will Quiñones, president of the group, said they are hoping for a great turnout like last year and are looking to bring the same energy with live traditional Puerto Rican music, food trucks and merchandise vendors.

Quiñones, co-founder of Taino Productions, will also be a part of Noche Latina, or Latin Night, on July 29 at 8 p.m., as well as many salsa nights. Salsa and line dancing nights will alternate on Thursdays starting June 29 at 7 p.m.

Sugrue said this summer marks the return of Polka Days June 21-24 for polka dancing, and “sock hops” or DJs at the boardwalk on certain Tuesdays. He added that there would be a lot of great music tribute nights, such as BonJourney, a tribute to Journey and Bon Jovi, June 16; a Grateful Dead tribute June 23; and a Motown tribute with fireworks Aug. 11.
