Work on northbound span of Gold Star Bridge reduces traffic to four lanes

Drivers can expect more delays on the northbound span of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, as construction has reduced traffic to four lanes and shut down the right shoulder until further notice, state Rep. Aundré Bumgardner, D-Groton, announced Tuesday.

“There will be construction signs, traffic drums, and other traffic control devices to alert drivers to the on-going work,” according to a news release.

“I urge everyone to slow down, be aware of their surroundings, and remain focused behind the wheel,” Bumgardner said in a statement. “This construction work is going to improve the Gold Star Memorial Bridge for years to come.”

The project is not related to the April 21 crash on the southbound side of the bridge.

“According to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the bridge itself is safe for drivers,” the news release said. “The bridge deck, sidewalk, fencing, railing, and shoulder pavement around the crash site will need further inspection and repairs before the sidewalk and shoulder can be reopened.”
