One dead after car strikes pole and garage in Norwich

Norwich ― A person died early Sunday after being extricated from a car following a crash into a pole and garage at East Main Street and Route 2, according to Battalion Chief Michael Dziavit of the Norwich Fire Department.

Dziavit said in a news release that police and fire crews received a report at 1:54 a.m. that a car had struck a pole, crashed into a building and was on fire. Police arrived first and reported a person was trapped inside the car, which had struck a garage and was smoking, though no fire was visible.

Firefighters arrived at 2 a.m., according to the news release, and found the car on its side, not touching the ground, with structural damage to the garage. By 2:18 a.m., the crew had stabilized the car, removed the roof and accessed the occupant, who had no pulse, according to the release.

The person, who was not identified in the release, was taken to Backus Hospital by American Ambulance but did not survive.

Firefighters remained on the scene for safe removal of the vehicle until 5:11 a.m. Norwich Utilities and the state Department of Transportation were notified of the damaged pole and a Norwich building official arrived to inspect the damage to the garage.

The Norwich Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
