New London Landmarks and Conn College to host lecture on city housing projects

New London - New London Landmarks and Connecticut College will co-host “Bridging the Gap with Stories: New London’s Housing Projects” on June 22.

This free presentation will be held 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ernst Common Room of the Blaustein Humanities Center at Connecticut College.

“Using clips from oral history interviews we’ve conducted over the past year, we’ll explore the history of New London’s subsidized housing projects and the people who’ve lived in them,” said Laura Natusch, executive director of New London Landmarks.

Dr. Anna Vallye, associate professor of art history and architectural studies at Connecticut College, will discuss the history of the projects in the context of mid-century urban renewal in New London.

She will also preview a redesigned and expanded version of the digital publication Mapping Urban Renewal in New London, 1941-1975, created by Connecticut College students and faculty, which includes multimedia stories and maps based on oral history interviews with New London residents. Urban Renewal and Highway Construction in New London (2021), edited by Vallye and published by the New London County Historical Society, will also be available for purchase.

This program is funded by the State Historic Preservation Office, CT Humanities, Eleven+ and Fiddleheads Food Co-op.
