Old Lyme Democrats endorse Shoemaker for first selectwoman

Old Lyme _ The Democratic Town Committee on Wednesday endorsed a slate of candidates that will once again include Martha Shoemaker for first selectwoman.

Current Republican First Selectman Tim Griswold is not seeking reelection. Shoemaker has served as the town’s third selectman since she received 1,596 votes to Griswold’s 1,700 votes.

Shoemaker will run with Board of Selectman candidate Jim Lampos, who lost his 2021 bid for the seat.

In a news release, DTC Chairwoman Mary Jo Nosal said many of the candidates have current or previous elected experience and will be “ready to lead on Day 1.”

The committee also endorsed former First Selectwoman Bonnie A. Reemsnyder for tax collector and incumbent Michael Reiter for treasurer. On the ticket for regular Board of Finance seats are incumbent Bennett J. Bernblum and Anna S. Reiter, with alternate positions being sought by Sheila A. Riffle, Diane Linderman and Candace A. Fuchs. Peter Hunt was endorsed for a regular seat on the Board of Assessment Appeals.

Region 18 Board of Education candidates running under the Democratic banner are Marisa Calvi-Rogers, Susan P. Fogliano and W. Scott Brown.

Incumbent Zoning Commission Chairman Paul Orzel, who is unaffiliated, was cross-endorsed by both parties.

The DTC also put up Denise Savageau for the Zoning Commission. Planning Commission endorsements went to Michael Aurelia and Howard J. Margules. Candidates for the Zoning Board of Appeals are Stephanie Mickle for a regular seat, as well as Kathleen Tracy and Michaelle Pearson for alternate positions.

Editor’s note: This story was updated to correct Shoemaker’s current position on the Board of Selectman.
