    Eastern Pequots hold council elections

    North Stonington ― Three incumbents and one newcomer won election to the Eastern Pequot Tribal Council in voting among tribal members July 22.

    Re-elected were Natasha Gambrell, La’Tasha Maddox and Tyrone Gambrell, who stepped down as comptroller. The newcomer elected member was Karif Almond.

    Seven candidates vied for the four seats up for election. Council terms are three years.

    The other members of the council are Mitchel Ray, chairman; Brenda Geer, vice chairwoman; Larry Pemberton, treasurer; Joanne Silva-Njoku; Valerie Gambrell; Lawrence Wilson; and Kiana Scruggs.

    About 150 tribal members attended the Easterns’ July 23 pow-wow on the tribe’s Wrights Road reservation, according to Ray, the tribal chairman.
