    Learning about crabs

Melissa Hoebel, of Portland, shows her son Mason, 5, a crab as they fish from the bridge at Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Melissa, who works as a science teacher, was teaching her kids how to identify the sex of the crabs before throwing them back in. “We’re not catching them for dinner,” she said, “we’re catching them for science and fun.” The family had been camping at the state park for four days and was heading home later on Wednesday.
