    Noank Town Dock, beach reopened

Groton ― Town Manager John Burt said Tuesday afternoon the Noank Town Dock and beach area is being reopened to the public.

Burt made the announcement after speaking with the Ledge Light Health District, which had recommended Friday that the area near the dock be closed to swimmers due to the presence of high levels of fecal coliform bacteria.

Ledge Light staff inspected Maxwell Boatyard’s septic system Tuesday and found no problems, according to Burt.

During the day, officials continued to search without success for the source of contamination that had fouled waters off Morgan Point, the southern peninsula of Noank. Town public works personnel who conducted dye tests on grinder pumps that process waste from Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough restaurant and Costello’s Clam Shack/Noank Shipyard also found nothing amiss, Burt said.

Public works will test other grinder pumps, a grease trap at Costello’s and other sites Wednesday and meet with state officials to inspect Noank Shipyard’s pump-out facility, he said.
