FEMA to test mobile alert system on Wednesday

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, along with the Federal Communications Commission, plans a nationwide mobile alert test on Wednesday.

The agency plans to send a text message to all cellphones in the United States, stating: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

The test will take place at approximately 2:20 p.m.

The message will be in either English or Spanish, depending on the phone’s language settings.

Radios and televisions will receive a similar test message.

People are encouraged to let their friends and family know about the planned test, so no one is alarmed when the test happens.

“The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level,” a news release says.
