    NL whaling history tour Saturday

New London ― Stories from the city’s whaling history will be featured in a final walking tour of the season at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The tour, which will last approximately 90 minutes, will begin at the cemetery’s office building near the Broad St. gate.

New London was the second-busiest whaling port in the country during the 19th century heyday of the industry. The business touched nearly every city resident in some manner during that time period and made New London a very wealthy place.

The tour includes stories of whaling captains, their wives and other notable people connected to whaling who are now buried at Cedar Grove. Cedar Grove is an historic, non-denominational 78-acre cemetery that dates to the mid-19th century.

Cost is $20 payable in cash on the day of the tour. There is no need to pre-register. All proceeds will benefit restoration projects at the cemetery. In the event of rain, the tour will not be held.
