Mystic woman seriously hurt in bicycle accident
Mystic -- A 68-year-old woman suffered a head injury and was hospitalized Sunday after her bicycle struck a car, Groton Town Police said.
Virginia Bitting of Mystic was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Hartford Hospital for treatment, police said in a news release.
Bitting, who was wearing a helmet, was lying in the road, unconscious and with a serious head injury when police arrived just after 2:38 p.m. She had struck a Honda CRV driven by Amy McKenna, 50, also of Mystic. McKenna was uninjured.
Also in the CRV were Sean McKenna, 54, and a juvenile. Neither was hurt.
Police determined that Bitting was headed north on Allyn Street near Edgecomb Street when she traveled into the northbound lane and struck McKenna’s vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.
Emergency responders included the Mystic Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics, Life Star helicopter, Stonington police and Ledyard police.
Members of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit were also on the scene to reconstruct the accident. Allyn Street was closed between Sandy Hollow Road and Edgecomb Street.
