Gusty wind, possible flooding on tap for Saturday

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and flood watch for New London County as a spring storm rolls though New England.

Two to three inches of rain are expected to fall across the state today with periods of heavy rainfall, gusty wind and possibly a thunderstorm. Some parts of northern Connecticut may experience icy conditions early. Temperatures in southeastern Connecticut, however, will be well above freezing. It is expected to reach 52 degrees in New London County on Saturday.

The wind advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. on Saturday until 2 a.m. on Sunday with winds 15 to 25 miles per hour and gusts up to 45 to 50 mph, the National Weather Service said.

A flood watch remains in effect through Sunday morning and excessive water runoff may result in flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas and locations where there is poor drainage.

The Yantic River in Norwich, which overflows its banks on occasions of excessive rain, is expected to reach a minor flood stage.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is monitoring the Fitchville Pond Dam in Bozrah, which was found to have leaks and led to an evacuation of area residents and businesses following a rainstorm in January. Work has since been completed to temporarily shore up the dam to prevent flooding.
