    Small earthquake reported in Ledyard

The U.S. Geological Survey, the federal agency that tracks seismic activity across the globe, confirmed a small earthquake in the Ledyard area on Thursday morning.

The USGS website lists a 1.8 magnitude quake having occurred at 8:20 a.m.

The town of Stonington, in a Facebook post on Thursday, said police and emergency management had been aware of “loud booms and shaking of buildings,” in the Mystic/ Old Mystic area.

Stonington Police Deputy Chief Todd Olson said several residents from the Mystic area called police to report windows shaking in their homes. Olson said police initially joined in a search for any blasting in the area but later found out about the earthquake. No damage was reported.

The magnitude of the quake is in a category of earthquake the USGS defines as “weak,”
