Lyme, Old Lyme to vote on additional $880K funding for senior center renovation

Special town meetings will be held Monday in Lyme and Old Lyme on a supplemental budget appropriation for the Lymes’ Senior Center renovation project.

Lyme’s residents and taxpayers will vote at 6 p.m. in the Lyme Town Hall, while Old Lyme’s vote will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School auditorium.

The $5.3 million renovation project is now expected to cost $880,000 more than the approved amount as construction bids came in $800,000 higher than anticipated and an $80,000 kitchen upgrade was added to the project in February. Old Lyme is responsible for $660,000 of the supplemental cost, while the smaller town of Lyme is responsible for $220,000.

Officials in the two towns were scrambling earlier this year after learning the project was about $1.3 million over budget. But the committee in a project update said architecture and construction management firms assigned to the project have identified about $600,000 in savings.

The Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance in both towns forwarded the funding request to voters.
