New London ― The Coast Guard academy announced Thursday night that Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas is scheduled to deliver the keynote address during the school’s 143rd commencement exercises on May 22.

The Coast Guard, unlike other military branches, falls under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security.

Mayorkas has served as Homeland Security secretary since 2021.

In February, the U.S. House of Representatives impeached Mayorkas by a 214-213 vote making him just the second cabinet member in U.S. history to be impeached and the first since 1876. The impeachment effort was led by House Republicans upset with his handling of immigration and border issues.

Last month, the Senate voted to dismiss the impeachment charges as unconstitutional, ending the impeachment without trial.
