Mohegan Sun ‘family’ mourns death of Jasper White, Summer Shack founder

Mohegan ― Executives and staff of Mohegan Sun are mourning the death of renowned chef and restaurateur Jasper White, whose Summer Shack seafood restaurant has long been a fixture at the casino.

"For more than 20 years, Jasper White's Summer Shack has been a fan-favorite at Mohegan Sun,” Jeff Hamilton, the casino’s president and general manager, said Monday. “White was an amazing chef and a brilliant partner. It was relationships like this one that really helped Mohegan Sun become a world-class dining destination alongside our gaming, hospitality and entertainment offerings.”

“From the entire Mohegan family, our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends," Hamilton said.

White’s death Saturday of a brain aneurysm was first reported by The Boston Globe, which described him as “Boston’s first celebrity chef and one of the innovators of New American Cuisine.” He was 69.

White opened his first Summer Shack in 2000 in Cambridge, Mass., and sold the business to the Lyons Group in 2017.

A second White restaurant at Mohegan Sun, Summer Shack Express, was among four food-court outlets that closed late last year to accommodate a new restaurant, The Shed, which is expected to open this spring.
