Deane-Shinbrot to challenge Conley for 40th House District seat

State Rep. Christine Conley, D-Groton, has received her party’s endorsement to seek reelection to the 40th District House seat and is being challenged by Groton Representative Town Meeting member Susan Deane-Shinbrot, who received the Republican nomination.

The 40th House District encompasses parts of Groton and New London.

Conley, an attorney at Embry, Neusner, Arscott, & Shafner, is running for her fifth term.

Deane-Shinbrot is the Republican floor leader of the RTM, where she has served 12 years and is chairwoman of the Public Works Committee and member of the Finance Committee.

Conley cited in a news release her work on legislation to require health insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions and to support jobs at Electric Boat, Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods and Millstone, as well as the manufacturing pipeline. She also cited the restoration of education funds and providing for school improvements.

“I am running to go to Hartford and to strengthen relationships with the state and businesses in order to keep our skilled workers employed, our schools funded, improve our infrastructure, and restore confidence to the middle class,” Conley said in a statement.

In a news release, Deane-Shinbrot, a retired Groton paraeducator, said she organized more than 200 paraeducators and tutors to form the CSEA-SEIU Para-Educator Council Union where she served as co-president for six years.

"I am passionate about continuing to serve our community and ensuring that the voices of Groton and New London are heard at the state level,“ Deane-Shinbrot said in a statement. ”My experience, dedication, and deep roots in this community have prepared me to be an effective advocate for all residents."
