    Community Bulletin Board for May 26, 2024

    East Lyme Historical Society flea market Sunday

    A Memorial Day Weekend Flea Market sponsored by the East Lyme Historical Society will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at 228 West Main St, Niantic.

    Vendors from around the state will be on hand, and visitors will be able to explore the historic Thomas Lee house with a free guided tour. Other dates for flea markets are July 4th weekend and Labor Day weekend.

    Candlelight vigil, parade in East Lyme

    The East Lyme Veterans Council will sponsor at candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at East Lyme Town Green to honor the memory of veterans lost at war. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the East Lyme American Legion Post.

    The town will also have a Memorial Day Parade at 2 p.m. Monday, May 27, running down Niantic’s Main Street, rain or shine.

    New London pre-Memorial Day vigil Sunday

    Capt. Michael Chien of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Research & Development Center will be joined by Joseph Danao, deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, during the 15th annual pre-Memorial Day Candlelight Vigil today honoring the late U.S. Army veteran Willis Sands Jr., a first responder during 9/11.

    The event will be held at Parade Plaza in downtown New London, with luminaries available at 6:45 p.m. and the lighting ceremony at 7:30 p.m. In the event of rain, the vigil will be held in Union Station across the street.

    Memorial Day Parade in Norwich on May 27

    The Norwich Memorial Day Parade commences at noon Monday, May 27. The parade starts from in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral (213 Broadway) and continues down Broadway to Washington Street.

    There is also a Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony, which will start at approximately 1 p.m. on Chelsea Parade. The program is located near the War Memorial area (across from Norwich Free Academy). The Norwich Memorial Day Parade is being presented and organized by the Norwich Area Veterans Council, the City of Norwich and the Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce.

    Starting at 10:30 a.m., Broadway will be closed to vehicle traffic from Crossway Street to Perkins Avenue. Perkins Avenue will be closed at McKinley Avenue. All other roadways will remain open until the start of the parade. All events are scheduled to be concluded by 3 p.m.

    Memorial service at sub vets monument May 27

    U.S. Submarine Veterans Groton Base will be holding a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII National Memorial East located on Bridge Street and Thames Street in Groton.

    The service will recognize all U.S. submarines that have been lost and all crewmembers lost onboard USS Scorpion (SSN 589) in May 1968 with a Tolling of the Boats. The memorial service is open to the public and all are invited to attend. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors at the Groton City Municipal Building, 295 Meridian St., in Groton.

    Lymes’ Senior Center to sponsor concert May 29

    The Lymes’ Senior Center will host a concert performance by the Old Lyme Town Band at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29 on the South Green (in front of Christ the King Church rectory, 1 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme). Concert is free and features a wide range of music. All are welcome. Bring a chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Christ the King Hall.

    ‘Worlds of Words’ performance May 31 in East Lyme

    STARS to STEM Inc is presenting a multimedia planetarium performance, “Worlds of Words,” at 7 p.m. Friday, May 31 in the East Lyme High School planetarium. The evening will feature a book signing, poetry reading and musical performance presented partly by Steven Ostrowski, East Lyme author and artist, who will read from his new novel, “The Highway of Spirit and Bone.”

    Stonington church holds 350th celebration

    The Road Church (First Congregational Church of Stonington) invites everyone to celebrate its 350th anniversary at the Share the Love Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.

    The church field will be filled with favorite games to entertain all ages, and it’s all free. The musical stage will be shared by Carolyn Engle, Lisa Rautenberg and Friends as well as sets by Geoff Kaufmann. Food trucks also will be on hand, and there will be The Pie Team from North Stonington Congregational Church.

    The Church Meetinghouse will have guided tours at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. with a number of historic items on display. The Road Church is the oldest church in Stonington and one of the oldest in Connecticut.

    Also, at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 2, a service of music and celebration will be held under the tent. A coffee hour will follow in the Parish Hall. Rev. Charles Hambrick-Stowe, a noted historian of American Christianity and its history, will be the guest speaker.

    Annual Spring Fair June 1 at Mystic & Noank Library

    The Friends Annual Spring Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, rain or shine, at the Mystic & Noank Library.

    Books for all ages will be for sale, plus white elephant treasures galore, and the Mystic Garden Club's plants and related items. The Mysticalligraphers will make bookmarks for fair goers in the morning and there will be live entertainment, provided by Brett and Barb, the Mystic Ukulele Strummers, and the Mystic Garland Dancers.

    Community gardening event June 1 in Norwich

    Kelly Middle School in Norwich will hold a garden demonstration and community event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

    There will be seedlings to plant in the garden and take home and a Square Foot Gardening demonstration, all while surrounded by the native pollinating perennials that are starting to bloom. The school is hoping to expand its garden into a community/school partnership to act as a learning experience for students and a resource for families.
