Groton ― Lawrence + Memorial Hospital will offer free hernia screenings from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Pequot Health Center, 52 Hazelnut Hill Road.

Both men and women can experience hernias, which, if left untreated, may require surgery. L+M surgeons perform same-day, minimally invasive robotic surgeries that shorten recovery times.

Hernias can occur due to childbirth, excessive weight, lifting or straining, persistent, heavy cough or prior surgery.
