‘Failing is perfectly okay,’ the message to Waterford graduates

Valedictorian Suhana Sharma: “Today is a day of celebration. We celebrate reaching a major life goal: a completion of secondary education. We are equals and today we stand ― or rather we sit ― proud together as graduates. And while we celebrate, let us also acknowledge the other side of success: failure. Because while getting to this point, all of us here have failed. And in the future, as we chase our next goals and dreams, we will fail again and again. But here’s the thing: failing is perfectly okay. Everyone fails, even the people who are at the top.”
Salutatorian Payton Smith: “I have set plenty of goals for myself throughout high school to reach this point. Of course there were academic goals. Straight As, to try new subjects. Getting through physics without freaking out every single day. I would say that goal was achieved about 75% of the time. On a more serious note, I wanted to find the people I would be friends with for life. I wanted to try new things. I wanted to experience as much as could. I wanted to cherish my years as a teenager before the next step in my life. And I can excitedly and gratefully say that I have. I hope you all did too.”
