Washington Park basketball courts to be renovated

Groton ― The Connecticut Sun plans to renovate two basketball courts at Washington Park in the City of Groton.

Construction will begin in September on the project that the Connecticut Sun is undertaking with BlueForge Alliance and the BuildSubmarines.com platform, according to a news release.

The Connecticut Sun will hold a court revitalization ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday during BuildSubmarines.com's Fan Fest, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Washington Park.

The ceremony will feature a ribbon cutting and remarks from City of Groton Mayor Keith Hedrick, Connecticut Sun President Jen Rizzotti, and representatives from General Dynamics Electric Boat, BlueForge Alliance, and the U.S. Navy's Submarine Industrial Base.

In addition, a Connecticut Sun booth will host merchandise giveaways and a chance to win courtside seats to the Sun's July 14 game against the Phoenix Mercury. Sun guards Moriah Jefferson and Rachel Banham will participate in the festivities from 7 to 8 p.m. to sign autographs and take photos. There also will be a BuildSubmarines.com booth, live music and food trucks.

BlueForge Alliance is a nonprofit “that supports the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base initiatives and efforts to strengthen and sustain the maritime manufacturing sector,” according to the release.

    BlueForge Alliance owns BuildSubmarines.com.
