    Local roundup: Tigers off to 2-0 start with 10-3 win over Spinners

    Norwich — The Connecticut Tigers erupted for seven runs over the first two innings and cruised to a 10-3 win over the Lowell Spinners in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.

    Gresuan Silverio went 3-for-5 and a double and three RBI to lead the Tigers (2-0) while Darwin Alvarado added a two-run triple and sacrifice fly.

    Starter Jose Vasquez, the first of four Connecticut pitchers, earned the win by allowing only one run on one hit over five innings while striking out five and walking only two.

    The Tigers and Spinners, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, play again at 4 p.m. Sunday.

    • Stevie Mangrum hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th as the Newport Gulls overcame 6-0 and 9-2 deficits to defeat the Mystic Schooners 11-9 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School. The Gulls (6-4) scored five runs in the seventh to pull within 9-7 and tied it with two in the ninth.

    Steven Barmakian (George Washington) went 3-for-6 to lead the Schooners (4-6) while Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, Chris Sullivan (Hartford) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Zach Ardito (Hartford) added a pair of hits.

    American Legion Zone 6

    • New London and Tri-Town split a Zone 6 doubleheader at Sal Amanti Field. New London won the opener 8-4 before Tri-Town rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win the second game 5-4.

    Shaun Cambisaca was the winning pitcher in Game 1 for New London (6-2) while Mike Williams tripled and scored three runs. Henrik Khoury had two hits and two RBI and Elijah Martinez had a hit and two RBI. Martinez also had a hit and two RBI in the second game while Khoury and Nate Whipple had two hits apiece.
