Connecticut Tigers fall to Staten Island Yankees in eight innings

The Staten Island Yankees scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning and held on to beat the Connecticut Tigers 3-2 in the first game of a New York-Penn League doubleheader at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

For the second day in a row, the second game of the doubleheader was canceled by rain.

The Tigers (24-28) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Eric De La Rosa singled home Clark Brinkman. Staten Island tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth. The game, scheduled for seven innings, headed to the eighth tied at 1-1.

Connecticut got a run back in the bottom of the eighth when Brinkman scored on a double play. But Isrrael De La Cruz struck out to end the game. Brinkman had two hits and scored twice.

The Tigers are off for the league's all-star break until Thursday, when they open a two-game series at Tri-City.
